I've cooked it over and over again and it's so easy to make! I got this recipe from here.

Ingredients
Base
1 cup plain flour, sifted
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup desiccated coconut
125g butter, melted

Caramel Filling
1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 tablespoons golden syrup
60g butter, melted

Chocolate Topping
60g copha, chopped
125g cooking chocolate, chopped

Method
Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a pan that you would usually use for slices, something that is shallow and rectangular.

Combine all the base ingredients. Press into prepared tin and bake for 15 - 20 minutes, until golden. Let it cool.

To make the filling, this recipe says to add all ingredients to a saucepan and heat it until it turns golden. The problem is with the caramel 'catching' in certain areas on the saucepan so you need to stir it constantly so it doesn't get burnt. There are plenty of other methods that you can use to cook caramel. A link here talks about a few techniques: dulce de leche. After you have cooked the caramel, pour on top of base and cook in the oven for another 10-15 minutes. It helps set the caramel in place. Leave in the fridge until it has cooled and is firm to touch.

To make the chocolate add the copha and chocolate to a double boiler (boiling water in saucepan directly over heat, metal/glass bowl ontop) and heat until it's melted down and combined. You don't really need to use the copha, I guess it just helps with setting the chocolate. I've made it before without the copha and can't notice much difference. Pour the melted chocolate over the set caramel and put into the fridge to cool and solidify. I find it easier to cut the slice into squares when it's set for an hour. If you wait longer, the chocolate usually breaks in weird cracks when you try to cut it into squares.
I got this shirt for $3 from supre. Pretty good :) Here's a tutorial on how to achieve this look.

Step 1

Lay the shirt flat and mark out the middle of where you are cutting. Then mark out each line, I did mine 2cm apart. Also mark out how far out you will cut to, I did mine in a v-shape.

Step 2

Cut out the strips, it does not have to be perfect, you won't notice in the end result.

Step 3

Grab the second strip and place it on top of the first strip.

Step 4

Pull the second strip under the first strip.

Step 5

Place the third strip on top of the loop of the second strip, repeat until you reach the end.

Step 6

When you've reach the end of the strips, take the loop to the inside of the shirt and handstitch it into place.

Now you should be finished :) Here's a photo of me wearing the final product. This technique can be applied to anything, as long as the fabric is knitted and not woven, so it doesn't fray.

raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-70382437105607704232012-01-13T21:12:00.000-08:002012-01-13T21:12:50.761-08:00Nail InspirationSo lately I haven't posted much. I've had to get my laptop fixed and it cost $250 :( Still paying back my dad for that. But anyways, I have a couple photos of some nail art I've been doing the past couple weeks :D

This is a simple plaid design I wanted to try out. I found it hard trying to make the lines straight. Also, I had the problem where my clear nailpolish had picked up some of the red even though it was dry, and it streaked a little.

This was done with 2 different nail polishes. To make the top colour 'fade' more I used a cotton tip and dabbed it.
Here are the nail polishes I used for this look:

And finally nails I did for new years eve, I used around 10 different polishes in total!

raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-24006384994145838842011-12-23T23:59:00.000-08:002011-12-24T00:00:38.859-08:00Pink and Green NailsI bought new nail polishes last week and did my nails in the new colours :)

So this nail design I used Mini Colorama in Green Park by Maybelline New York and Efferescent Opal by Revlon. The pink colour does have a opal type shine to it but it cannot be seen in the photos :( it's a really pretty colour though

To do this design, I painted 2 coats of the pink, then used french nail stickers for the green tips. I also added green gems to the ring fingers of each side to have something different :)raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-34550291240362779292011-12-23T02:53:00.000-08:002011-12-23T07:46:41.549-08:00Rum BallsI love Christmas, mainly because of all the treats that are made and seeing your family together in one spot. One of my favourite treats are rum balls and I decided to make a batch of them today and share the recipe :)

I got this recipe from a blog called Exclusively Food, however I have adapted and changed some of the measurements in the recipe to suit myself.

Ingredients
250g Nice biscuits (if you don't know what they are, click here)
4 tablespoons of cocoa powder
A heaped 1/2 cup of desiccated coconut
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
4 tablespoons of rum
1/2 cup of sultanas
1 tin of condensed milk
Chocolate sprinkles
Extra coconut

Method
Crush Nice biscuits using a processor. If you don't have one (like me) put a few biscuits into a sandwich bag, seal it up and then get a rolling pin and smash them up. After this is done, put all the ingredients into large bowl and combine together. Put the bowl in the fridge for about 30 - 60 minutes until it's set well to roll into balls. After the mixture has set, get 2 small plates and put coconut on one and chocolate sprinkles on the other for coating the rum balls. Leave the balls to set in the fridge overnight so the flavours can mix together well. Enjoy! :)raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-15304590571013880722011-12-22T02:26:00.000-08:002011-12-22T02:27:12.596-08:00Purple Chiffon ShirtI didn't have time to post this Tuesday and the internet was down last night as well :( I am also really sick again - tonsillitis twice in a month isn't fun D;
So any ways, here is a shirt I did a couple of months ago.

<img border="0" height="399"" src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/chookgirl/blog/DSCF9021.jpg" width="299" />

So last week I posted a dress, and I also made this shirt from the same dress pattern. All I did was lengthen the top half of the dress and ignored the darts the dress pattern had added in. I made the shirt in a nice purple chiffon and the collar is made from taffeta, a silver/grey blend. I bought matching buttons to suit the collar - a nice shiny grey colour.
I found that sewing the shirt was pretty easy apart from the parts where the material folded back onto itself. The hardest part with chiffon though is cutting out the pattern.
Here's a photo of me wearing it with a black singlet underneath :)

raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-91962145870697658442011-12-13T04:58:00.000-08:002011-12-13T04:58:22.287-08:00Black Retro DressAnother Tuesday - another sewing entry! It's pretty late, but I've been busy a bit today, so now I'm sitting down at my laptop with a nice cup of chamomile tea blend from T2 :) It's also the 11th day I've had tonsillitis, it's nearly gone but I know if I stop taking my antibiotics, I'll most likely get sick again :( So any ways, here's a project a did a fair while back, it's made from a Burda pattern I purchased.

So with this dress I used a polycotton blend for the black and white material. I bought the white musical note buttons from eBay (if you're ever wondering where I buy the items, just comment and ask). I had a lot of fun making this dress, it's probably one of my favourite things I've made so far :) The dress has some pleats in it, as you can see in the photo below. I also altered the pattern slightly, by not adding on sleeves to the dress.

One thing I didn't add to the dress that I should have was a zipper on the side around the waist area. The dress has no stretch so it's hard to fit over my chest when I put it on and take it off, guess I shouldn't have been so lazy and bought a zipper but I just really wanted to get it finished haha. The finished dress' length is to my knees - nice length. I'll finish the post off with me wearing the dress out at the Roma Street Parkland, striking my "blue steel" look.

I'll write up posts for games, tv shows, movies and books when I finish them.

Last night I finally finished reading Sweeney Todd. I had purchased a version that was edited by Robert L. Mack. The original book, published from 1846 to 1847 was titled as The String of Pearls: A Romance. The book was published in 18 weekly parts and was probably written by James Malcolm Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest (no one is really sure who wrote the original 18 part series of the story). To this day, Sweeney Todd has been portrayed in countless theatrical plays, movies and musicals.

It took me AGES to read, I just couldn't get stuck into the book until the last couple of chapters, it just didn't interest me that much. I think it's the way the book is written and has repetitive stuff in it, for example, you could skip a whole paragraph and know what the character is still talking about. The book though, was edited well with having explanatory notes for terms most people wouldn't understand - such as a Jarvey which was slang for a hackney coach or cab-driver. The explanatory notes also explained the geography of the setting pretty well so it's easier for the reader to understand where the different scenes of the story is located at. Overall, I didn't mind reading this book, I think it was a worthwhile read - it was interesting to see how it was written and edited and how it also compared to the popular movie musical which starred Johnny Depp (who is also on the cover of the book). I would rate this book 6.5/10raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-50876129523571933642011-12-09T22:35:00.000-08:002011-12-09T22:35:40.922-08:00Caramel and Meringue TartsThe other day when I was with my dad in Coles, they had small recipe books out the front for Christmas baking - yum! I love baking and making new stuff so I decided to make one of the recipes in the booklet. Here's how they turned out, I have also included the recipe.

Ingredients
For Pastry
1 cup of plain flour
80g of butter, diced
1-2 tablespoons of water

For Caramel
1 can (375g) of sweetened condensed milk
2 tablespoons of golden syrup
50g of butter

For Meringue
2 egg whites
1/2 cup of caster sugar

Method

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease a 12-hole patty pan. (When I made mine, I just used a 12 hole muffin tin) To make the pastry, sift flour in a large bowl and add the butter. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture starts to resemble breadcrumbs. Add water a tablespoon at a time (you might not need 2, only 1), until the mixture comes together. Turn out the mix onto a lightly floured surface and need lightly. Roll out the dough until it's about 3mm thick. Cut out small circles (I actually used the top of my 1/2 cup measuring cup haha) and place circles into prepared pan. So if you're using a muffin tin, just make sure the circles are sitting at the bottom. Prick the bases with a fork and chill in the fridge for 10 minutes. Bake for about 15 minutes, until lightly golden.
In a medium saucepan, combine the ingredients for the caramel. Cook while continuously stirring on a low heat for 8-10 minutes or until golden and thick. Watch out that you don't burn the caramel as it won't taste very pleasant! I usually cook mine till it gets nice and thick so it scrapes away from the pan nicely and holds it shape. Top the caramel onto the cooked bases

In a large clean bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks start to form. Slowly add the sugar, while still beating the egg whites. When all the sugar is added beat well until the mixture is thick and glossy. Using a piping bag (if you don't have one just spoon it on), pipe the meringue mixture on top of the caramel (make sure it's cool) then pop them back into the oven for another 8 minutes. Have the oven around a low temp - 140 degrees should be good. When they have started to slightly colour, turn off the oven and allow the meringues to cool in there (especially on rainy days when there's more moisture in the air). Most of the tips about the meringues wasn't added to the booklet so I looked up a recipe for them.raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-38075890552614122382011-12-09T05:02:00.000-08:002011-12-09T22:36:13.323-08:00Orange and Blue NailsWhen I don't really have much time to do my nails, I usually do split colour on them.
The colours I used are "Scented Bright Orange" by BYS (it doesn't smell though haha) and "Turquoise #3" by BK (some random Asian brand at Cosmetics Plus).
To achieve the look, I painted 2 coats of the orange and waited it to dry, then I did 1/3 of the nail in the blue. Then I finished off with a top coat. I like the look of contrasting colours so it's definitely something I love doing to my nails a fair bit :3
Also - sorry about the bad photo quality, took it on my phone!raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-55868410743555208332011-12-06T18:30:00.000-08:002011-12-09T22:36:24.990-08:00Half-Moon NailsSo today is a gross rainy day, and i'm still sick with tonsillitis. I've had it for 5 days now! Anyways, I decided to share a nail art design I did a while ago.
Firstly, I got some french tip manicure stickers and applied them to the bottom of my nail. This is so I don't paint on the half moon section and leave it plain.
Next I put my base colour on, which is a Napoleon Perdis purple colour from their Chandelier Shine range (the name of the colour is missing, sorry!)
After I have applied 2 coats, I take off the sticker at the bottom and get a nail art brush for the fine gold line at the bottom. The gold colour is Gold Rush Fever by Ulta3. When this is completed I add a top coat and it's complete.
Here's a youtube video of an example of half-moon nails. Enjoy :)
I want to add that I'll slowly add step by step photos of me doing my own nails in the future, just need to get around to it :)raechelizabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00387318544064360015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2775447638903786934.post-75549518404347270472011-12-06T03:58:00.000-08:002011-12-09T22:36:38.324-08:00First post + Sewing projectHey so I finally gotten my lazy ass in gear and decided to bring up my blog. My blog is mainly going to be about the stuff I sew and make, movies + games I watch and random findings on the internet. I'm going to try and set a certain day each type of post will come out. Tuesday's will have sewing projects from now on :)

Long sleeved button-up shirt. This is my first type of button up shirt i sewn, found that this project took me a fair while too because of all the small pieces that go together. When i first made it, I didn't realise how long it would be! But I do like it this length as I don't need to wear pants but only tights underneath :)
I bought the fabric off eBay and the owl buttons off eBay as well. Pretty sure the material is 100% cotton so it's really soft and it's fairly lightweight. Here's some photos:
